Adjacent to the existing Allston Public Library, this elementary school focuses on STEM and sustainable lifestyle education for urban youth. The architectural parti is a U-shape plan with a special emphasis on the spaces adjacent to Harvard Farm, a proposed park system on the southern edge of the Allston campus. On the ground level these spaces include the main entrance, student lounge, and the security/administration offices. The second level spaces include the teacher’s lounge, gallery and cafeteria, and the music/gathering hall. The undulating roof over these spaces responds to the programmatic needs while expressing the locations of two wings and courtyard beyond. The northwest wing contains the library that connects to the children’s section of the Allston Public Library, all twenty-seven classrooms, and a roof level science lab with a greenhouse and outdoor garden space. This outdoor room is connected to the rooftop playground above the gymnasium via a bridge that defines the threshold of the courtyard. The outdoor spaces are complimented by a multi-purpose indoor gymnasium that hosts recreational activities and community functions during non-school hours.
